England vs Uruguay - Everything You Need To Know

New, 6 comments

England face Uruguay in their second Group D game - with both sides coming into the game on the back of defeats, this could be a pivotal game for both nations.

Pool

It's not often that England lose a game of football and the fans come away from it feeling rather positive. The attacking ability of Sterling, Sturridge scoring on the World stage and England coming back from a goal down were all huge positives for England and left us all feeling rather upbeat about the situation. The defeat was hard to take but if England can be more clinical in-front of goal we can expect to score a few goals against an average Uruguay side. Fingers crossed Suarez only makes the bench.

Kick Off - 20:00 (GMT)

An earlier kick off this time for England which will be handy if you have to be up early for work the next day.

TV Channel - ITV / ITV HD - Coverage starts at 19:00

We're moving over to ITV for Englands second game and the wonderful Adrian Chiles. We suggest walking the dog, mowing the lawn or pop to the shops to stock up on drinks to avoid having to listen to the ITV panel before kick off.

Stadium - Arena de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo

This was the stadium that hosted the opening game between Brazil,Croatia and Pitbull last week .This 65,000 seater stadium is home to Brazilian side Corinthians. A little closer to Englands base in Rio, this is only a short 30 minute flight which will suit the England camp much better.

Last Games

England 1-2 Italy
Uruguay 1-3 Costa Rica

A much better performance from England than we have seen in previous tournaments but we still ended up with a defeat. Uruguay suffered a shock 3-1 defeat at the hands of Costa Rica which not many people would have predicted before kick off.

Probable Lineups

England - Hart, Johnson, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines, Gerrard (C), Henderson, Welbeck, Sterling, Rooney, Sturridge

Uruguay - Muslera, Pereira, Caceres, Gargano, Lugano, Godin, Stuani, Rios, Forlan, Cavani, Rodriguez

The big dilemma for the England boss is who should start on the wings. Rooney had a very quiet game and clearly doesn't suit playing out wide. Although he got an assist for Englands goal he had a largely ineffective game. Could Sterling go out wide and allow Rooney to play through the middle or does Barkley deserve a starting spot in place of Rooney?

The Uruguay team news centres around Luis Suarez and whether he will be fit to play. He didn't get on the pitch against Costa Rica and even when they were 2-1 down with 10 minutes to go he wasn't utilised which would suggest he wasn't fit to play at all.

The Odds

England Win - 6/5
Uruguay Win - 2/1
Draw - 23/10

England are slight favourites for this game and righlty so after the performances of both sides on Saturday. Uruguay will have to improve dramatically where as England just need to be a little more clinical in-front of goal to secure victory.

Weather Forecast

A big change in the weather compared to Manaus. As you can see from the forecast below the temperature is going to be a lot cooler despite the kick off being around 3pm local time

A crucial game for both sides with a defeat for either side virtually sending the losers home in a disappointing manner. England go into the game on the back of a very positive performance and should have too much quality for a poor Uruguay side.
