World Cup Injury Watch: Group C & D

With less than two months away before the World Cup, here's the latest injury news for teams in groups C & D. England fans will be chewing their nails, while Italy will receive some boost as players are starting to return to full fitness.

Group C

Colombia

Radamel Falcao, attacker, ACL

The Monaco striker suffer the dreaded ACL injury back in January, but is hopeful and optimistic of playing in the World Cup.

Greece

Kostas Mitroglou, attacker, knee

The Greek striker who made the switch from Olympiakos to Fulham last January, has only played 120 minutes of football with his new side. He's currently sidelined with a knee injury, and last played against Cardiff a month ago.

Giorgos Karagounis, midfielder, knock

Greek's skipper is currently out with a knock, though there is no specific news or timeline about his return.

Ivory Coast

Arouna Kone, attacker, knee

Kone, who followed Roberto Martinez in making the switch from Wigan to Everton, suffered a knee injury back in November and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Lacina Traore, attacker, hamstring

Meanwhile, the man who supposedly was brought to add depth to Everton striking ranks is also out with a hamstring injury, though Martinez believes that he could still play this season.

Japan

Maya Yoshida, defender, knee

The Southampton defender has been ruled out for six weeks with a knee injury, but should be good to go for the World Cup.

Makoto Hasebe, midfielder, knee

Hasebe who plays for FC Nurnberg, is currently sidelined with a knee injury sustained back in January.

Atsuto Uchida, defender, thigh

Schalke's right back Uchida, sustained a thigh injury back in February, no report yet on his return date.

Group D

Uruguay

No injury for Uruguay as they hope to go one better in this World Cup after a semifinal appearance in South Africa 4 years ago. They'll be boosted by the news that Sebastian Coates has returned following an 8-moths absence due to knee injury.

Costa Rica

Bryan Oviedo, defender, broken leg

The Everton man suffered a broken leg injury during The FA Cup tie against Stevenage back in January 25th. However, five weeks after his injury, Oviedo is already back in the gym, and just might play in the World Cup despite the initial fears that he'll have to miss the tournament.

England

Jack Wilshere. midfielder, hairline fracture in left foot

The Arsenal midfielder sustain the injury following a 50-50 challenge against Daniel Agger in an international friendly against Denmark on March 5th. According to Arsene Wengerhe should be running next week and might even play again before the season ends.

Theo Walcott, attacker, ACL

Walcott suffered an ACL injury in The FA Cup 3rd round tie against Tottenham and has been ruled out for six months.

Jay Rodriguez, attacker, ACL

Walcott injury opened up the chance for other sot step up, Jay Rodriguez was one of the name that could possibly benefit from Walcott's injury, having scored 17 goals for Southampton this season. Unfortunately, Rodriguez suffered an ACL injury himself during a match against Manchester City a week ago, and will miss the World Cup.

Jermain Defoe, attacker, hamstring

Defoe, currently playing for MLS side Toronto FC has enjoyed a great start to his career in North America, scoring 3 goals in his first 3 games (all as starter). However he has missed his side last two games with a hamstring injury.

Phil Jagielka, defender, hamstring

Jagielka has been missing for both club and country since featuring against Chelsea back in February with a hamstring problem. According to Roberto Martinez, Jagielka could make his comeback against Manchester United this weekend.

Kyle Walker, defender, pelvis

Walker last played for Tottenham against Benfica back on March 13th. Tim Sherwood said that he might miss the rest of the season but should be good to go for the World Cup.

Wayne Rooney, attacker, chipped bone in toe

Manchester United are considering to rest Rooney for the rest of the season, to let him recover from a chipped bone in his toe.

Daniel Sturridge, attacker, hamstring

The striker was forced to go off in the 66th minute clash against Manchester City with a hamstring injury and will be assessed over the few days.

Italy

Christian Maggio, defender, collapsed lung

Maggio has been absent since March 11th after needing a surgery for a collapsed lung. He's back in training but has not played in a competitive match yet.

Federico Balzaretti, defender, hernia

The AS Roma defender has been absent since November with hernia, and has also suffered several setbacks during the recovery process.

Stephan El Shaarawy, attacker, foot

El Shaarawy has been absent since December with a micro fracture on his left foot. However he has returned to training last week and should return for AC Milan before the season is over.

Giuseppe Rossi, attacker, knee

Another good news for Italy as Giuseppe Rossi who injures his knee back in January, has also returned to training.

Manolo Gabbiadini, attacker, shoulder

The Sampdoria striker did not feature against Inter last Sunday with a shoulder injury. No news yet on his expected return date.
