Roy Hodgson explained his selection of Jay Rodriguez as cover for Danny Welbeck who is currently injured with a knee problem:
On Rodriguez, Danny Welbeck is injured and although we hope he will be fit I see Rodriguez as a Welbeck replacement.
"He is a wide forward who likes to attack and get into the penalty box, he's played well and it will be man interesting opportunity for him to get nine days training and a few games.
"We should get to know a little bit more about him.
Danny Welbeck has sat out the last five games for Manchester United, and isn't in consideration for selection on Sunday. Which means that with the England friendlies coming on the 15th and 19th of November, he could miss out on both games.
This is the kind of selection that I just don't understand. Danny has been injured since the start/middle of October, but we already know what he can offer. The best thing for him is to concentrate on his rehab back at Manchester United's training facility with the team doctors. Instead he'll be joining up with the England team, team doctors and likely won't play in the friendlies.
This is a spot that could and should have been used on someone else who can train at full fitness and who we can give a run out to against Chile and or Germany.
