Whenever we get to the World Cup, we always hear how the English season is too long and how exhaustion takes over due to us not having a Winter break, so a proactive approach by the manager and the FA to give his older players a rest when they really are not needed would be an intelligent approach would it not? Instead of making the likes of Gerrard, Lampard and Cole travel, let them stay at home, take some days off, recharge the battery and give them a mini break.
I know that we all want to see the best English team on the field, especially against Germany where there are no friendlies. However at some point we are going to need to do some forward thinking, lets experiment while we can. Time is running out, you want a few veterans in the side, guys like Rooney. However in my humble opinion, the logical thing is leave the older guys who need their rest at home.
I’m happy to see Kieran Gibbs in the squad, but do we need three left backs? Otherwise the defence is as you would expect. Gibbs will likely be facing competition from Luke Shaw in 3-4 years for the starting spot in the English defence.
In terms of the midfield, a recall for Henderson is a little surprising. I’ve seen a lot of Liverpool this year, and not once have I come away thinking, that Henderson is a guy that desperately needs a chance. On the other hand the inclusion of Adam Lallana is a welcome breath of fresh air. He has performed consistently well for Southampton this season and deserves his shot. I just hope he actually gets some actual playing time and isn’t there to just bulk up the squad.
Jack Wilshere has been included in the squad but I really don’t agree with it. Not because I don’t like him as a player, he has a great future and is probably the most technically gifted English player currently available. However he has been injured for Arsenal recently and hasn’t been playing, we know what Wilshere can do. The best thing we can do is leave him to recover and let him fight his way back into the Arsenal squad, competitive Premier League football will tell us a lot more about him, although I think his place in Brazil is almost guaranteed.
It’s great to see Jermain Defoe back in the England fold, on the same day he became the leading scorer for Spurs in European competition. Jay Rodriguez we spoke about yesterday, why not give him a shot along with his teammate Rickie Lambert. I would have liked to have seen Saido Berahino included, however it’s perfectly understandable and acceptable that he is in the U21 squad for the more important European Qualification games.
Roy Hodgson announced his squad yesterday, but there are some question marks that were raised for me as a result!
