English Transfer Rumours: Tuesday Edition

New, 1 comment

Morning to one and all, today we continue to look at all the rumours revolving around English players in and around the National team.

Michael Regan

Alex McCarthy

I wasn't sure if I should include this one, but as McCarthy has made an appearance for the England U21's, I thought it was worth a mention. The Daily Star are suggesting that if Newcastle shot-stopper Tim Krul makes a move to Juventus in January, Newcastle will try and sign the young English Reading keeper. This seems to be based largely on the understanding that Juventus would agree to sign Krul for £20 million which is a stretch, and that McCarthy kept a clean sheet for Reading against Tottenham. McCarthy is still young at 23, and I remember some stunning performances in the Premier League, especially a game at Anfield against Liverpool where he kept a clean sheet. It can never hurt a keeper to move up a level, as long as he plays. Newcastle are a middle of the road team, and if he did move and perform well you could see a future England call-up for him.

Jermaine Defoe

One with a little meat considering the source. The Times have suggested that Tottenham would be willing to allow Defoe to move in January, but any team will have to fork out £6.5 million to nab the experienced England striker. Defoe has been limited to substitute appearances and spot starts this season thanks to the arrival of a host of attacking talent at Spurs last Summer, including Roberto Soldado. QPR have been linked with a move, and that makes sense with Harry Redknapp in charge at Loftus Road. However West Ham United have also been linked with Defoe, and we all know how desperate they are for a striker. Defoe started his career at Upton Park and a return to his original club could increase his chances of being included in Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad for Brazil.
