Saturday Football: England Performance Round-Up

It was a quiet day for the three lion boys as foreign talent took centre stage in the Premier League.

Looking through the performances today, there was a real lack of English talent making any kind of contribution.

Wayne Rooney continued his positive form with another goal for a United team who look to be righting the ship. Saido Berahino got on the score sheet for West Brom as they condemned Crystal Palace to yet another defeat. There were 20 goals scored in the Premier League today, and just two of them were by English players, if that is not a worry I don't know what is.

Joe Hart found himself on the bench for Manchester City, and backup England keeper, Norwich's John Ruddy shipped 7 goals away at Manchester City.

Liverpool did give a surprise start to England U21 Fullback Jon Flanagan, however he could not prevent Liverpool losing 2-0 away at Arsenal, who are in superb form. Kieran Gibbs continued to impress at left back for Arsenal, unfortunately for England and Gibbs we already have two superb left backs in Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines.

Southampton duo Adam Lallana and Ricky Lambert failed to impress as clear cut chances were hard to come by in their away game against Stoke.

Impressive Chelsea youngster Nathaniel Chalobah was an unused sub in Nottingham Forrest's defeat at home to Blackpool, and Impressive Derby youngster Will Hughes who we featured earlier today was powerless as his side were defeated 2-1 by QPR.

To sum up, this was a day to forget for English talent. Only 5 players of the 28 who appeared in the Chelsea v Newcastle game were English, and league leaders Arsenal fielded just the two in Kieran Gibbs and late substitute Carl Jenkinson.

Lets hope for a better day tomorrow as Everton host Tottenham and Cardiff host Swansea.
