Joe Hart has been under fire all season, he has made mistakes and just not looked comfortable or commanding in the penalty area. So as Wednesday's game drew to a close and Costel Pantilimon pulled off save after save to ensure Manchester City's progression in the League Cup, Joe Hart may have been twitching on the bench.
Asked about his potential goalkeeping dilemma, Chilean manager Manuel Pellegrini said he'd need to decide who would start Saturday against Norwich City:
"Whichever keeper plays will have my support,"
"Costel normally plays in the League Cup and FA Cup so it was an important game for him."
Pressed for further details about Hart's status, Pellegrini responded: "I have just told you I will think about that on Thursday."
Joe Hart has been England number one for a long time and he looked to bring some stability to the position. However if he were to lose his place in the Manchester City starting line-up, we may have to consider his position in the England team to be under threat. Can you really start a player who doesn't start for his own club? especially considering the 2nd and 3rd choice England keepers John Ruddy and Fraser Forster are performing at a high level for their domestic clubs, Norwich and Celtic respectively.
It's going to be an interesting story to keep an eye on as we get closer to the World Cup.
